Health & safety trainings are imperative for most industries. It is specially more important in construction, manufacturing, and oil & gas because of the multitudes of hazards and the costs associated with injury or accident due to negligence or incompetence. Therefore, companies must develop a training plan to provide awareness and increase the competence of their employees. By providing trainings, employers can ensure that their personnel are qualified to safely execute the project. Health and Safety trainings provide important knowledge about different types of hazards, risks associated with different hazards, conducting risk assessment and developing risk mitigation/contingency plans and the necessary skills required to handle a near miss or an accident.

The different types of hazards include: physical, chemical, biological, electrical, psychological, environmental and mechanical. Physical hazards are unsteady ladders, lack of ventilation, or light etc. Chemical hazards are inadequately stored radioactive materials, oil spills, or chemicals that may result in acute or chronic health risks upon inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion. Biological hazards include samples of microorganism, virus, or toxin. Biological hazards can be commonly found in medical
laboratories. Electrical hazards include exposed or bundles wires, poor electrical insulation, exposed energized equipment or a conductor etc. The risks associated with electrical hazards are: electric shock, electrocution, burns, fires, or explosions. Psychological hazards include bullying, harassment, work-related stress, violence etc. Psychological hazard can affect an employee’s ability to do their work in a healthy manner. Environmental hazard includes pesticides, Lead, smoke, Carbon emission, residual oils and lubricants, plastics etc. Finally, mechanical hazards are associated with machinery and equipment where the movement includes: crushing, shearing, cutting or severing, impact etc.
